Well there are already people fishing in the ports. The broadcast wasn't saying that was the only way to cook them. The octopus one was showing off "Look, this thing that most of you haven't considered eating is actually good!" That, in a way, is an immediate, though admittedly small, boost in food availability.

Bringing up corn, wheat, and beans, I'm sure those are already common foods in the world that people already know how to cook. We've seen them eat bread, so they already have wheat, in making the soy sauce they showed they already have beans, so it isn't a large stretch to assume they have corn.

On the grasshopper, I think that's an oversight. Or that was something the writers knew their foreign audiences would relate to.

Actually corn originated 9000 years ago from Mexico where it was first domesticated and it was not common in the US until some time after. Look it up pretty common history which you thought you knew LOL

The whole point of them introducing these types of food is because they are plentiful and otherwise in high supply and not being used. Vegetables don't just appear, they need to be grown and harvested which normally takes time.
